Forensic Healthcare Practitioner Week (#FHPWeek2026) is a dedicated week-long campaign recognising the essential contributions of forensic healthcare professionals across the UK. It is based on the US Forensic Nurses Day held on 7 November each year. Nurses, paramedics, midwives and doctors working in police custody suites and Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs) operate at a unique junction of health and justice. Their work safeguards individuals, supports investigations and upholds dignity and fairness in our local communities.

Substance Misuse and Vulnerability: Advancing Forensic Healthcare in Custody and SARC

This year’s Forensic Healthcare Practitioner Week continues the theme of our 2026 Conference: **Substance Misuse and Vulnerability**. It highlights the vital role forensic healthcare practitioners play in responding to complex needs, recognising vulnerability and delivering compassionate care where healthcare and justice meet. We invite practitioners, colleagues and partner agencies to join us in celebrating the expertise, diversity and dedication of our forensic healthcare workforce.

What we will do during the week

Throughout the week, UKAFNP will:

• Celebrate the professionalism, compassion and expertise of forensic healthcare practitioners working in police custody and sexual assault referral centres across the UK.
• Explore substance misuse and vulnerability, highlighting the role of FHPs in recognising complex needs, safeguarding individuals and providing person-centred care.
• Raise awareness of the specialist skills underpinning forensic healthcare, including clinical assessment, treatment, forensic examination, evidence collection, documentation and giving evidence in court.
• Champion recognition of the contribution FHPs make to healthcare and the criminal justice system through independent clinical judgement and evidence-based practice.
• Share daily messages, insights and resources through our social media channels and website, encouraging learning, reflection and discussion.
